Advice for People with Elderly Relatives

At Timely Healthcare Services Inc, we care deeply about seniors and vulnerable people. During times like the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s important to know how to keep your loved ones safe while still supporting them.

Health experts have explained that older people are more at risk of becoming seriously ill if they catch the virus. That’s why people over 70, and those with health conditions, were advised to stay home for long periods of time. This can feel lonely and difficult, so families often ask us how they can help while still keeping everyone safe.

If you need to visit an elderly relative for an important reason, always keep a safe distance of about 2 meters. Sadly, this means avoiding hugs and kisses, but it helps keep them safe. Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer when needed.

If you can’t visit, here are some simple ways to support your loved ones:

Stay in touch by phone

A simple phone call can make a huge difference. Talk about everyday things, like TV shows, the garden, the weather, or what the children have been up to. Light conversations help lift spirits and reduce worry.

Make a list of helpful contacts

Write down useful phone numbers and websites for them to keep by the phone. This way, if they need help, they know exactly who to call.

Encourage light exercise

Staying active is important for health. Suggest simple things they can do at home like chair exercises, gentle stretching, or even lifting small items like tins of food. You can motivate them by sharing what you’ve been doing too.

Share the responsibility

If you have other family members, create a small rota so everyone takes turns checking in. This keeps your relative connected and makes sure no one feels alone.

Help with shopping

Online shopping can be confusing for some seniors. Offer to help order groceries online, or check what they need and arrange delivery. If that’s not possible, let them know about local services that can deliver food safely.

Watch out for scams

Sadly, some people take advantage of the elderly. Remind your loved ones never to give personal or bank details over the phone or to strangers.

Enjoy gardening

If they have a garden or even a small balcony, encourage them to care for plants. Gardening is good for both the mind and body. Even watering pots or growing herbs on the windowsill can bring joy.

Video calls with family

If possible, help them connect through video calls. Seeing family, even on a screen, can make them feel happier and less lonely. Pets can also bring comfort and cheer.

Keep the mind active

Encourage fun activities like crosswords, puzzles, reading, or simple games. You could drop off a new puzzle book at their doorstep as a surprise—it’s a small gesture that means a lot.
